Sweetbitter
I got the opportunity to work on both season 1 and 2 of Sweetbitter on Starz. The series is based on the popular book series about a young girl arriving in New York and making a life for herself as a waitress at a fancy restaurant.
Season One
Season Two
Season One focused on the fancy restaurant and Tess’s introduction to the world she stumbled into. We leaned into the pinks and blue hues often found in the scenes. In Season Two, our client wanted to mix things up. We added more grit, made things less clean, and designed with purple hues, while also romanticizing New York and the importance it holds to each of the characters.
For the most part the Season Two Pre-Premiere content was photos. Our challenge was to figure out a way to spruce things up a bit and add motion to these without it feeling too cheesy or unrealistic. This is where we got the idea for reflections. Using stock photos of New York, some compositing in Photoshop, a few flares and atmospheric dust, we were able to highlight each character while also showcasing 90’s New York city within the reflections around them.
